W9GBJan 28, I've watched all of his videos, he's a sharp guy and a good educator. I agree. Paul's videos are easy to follow, and I always learn something, even from the most basic of his videos. I haven't looked into his class yet, but I certainly will have a look to see if it is the right level. Ah, I meant the FT!My favorite scratch build of was the capacitor discharge tool designed by and published by Mr. Paul Carlson on his Patreon website, Mr. His lab is simply amazing, his expertise is second-to-none, and his willingness to share what he knows is beyond generous.
He not only guides the viewer through construction step-by-step, he takes the time to explain the theory behind each circuit and occasionally challenges the viewer to solve problems along the way. There is simply no better place to gain a quality electronics education at any cost. Many of the Mr. Carlson offers an in-depth electronics course via Patreon. The capacitor discharge tool I built was presented on the Patreon site in a pair of videos.
In the first video, Mr. Carlson introduces the concept and specs and provided the list of components needed for the build, He challenged his viewers to attempt to design the circuit themselves and the best viewer circuits were showcased in the second video where he revealed his design for the project followed by step by step build instructions. The circuit is composed of four 1k 50 w resistors wired in series to provide a load to drain charged capacitors. There are two LEDs wired in parallel with dropping resistors and a 5.
Depending on polarity, one if the two LEDs will light when the probes are connected to the cap and will dim out as the cap is discharged. The other set of probe leads us into a standard voltmeter to show the cap charge.
This way I can be sure when the cap is safely discharged. My finished and tested project is shown above.
Mr. Carlson's Lab : New Electronics Course [Patreon]
By connecting the output probes to my Ohm meter and getting a 4K ohm reading, I confirmed the load resistors were properly wired in series. For the next test, I shorted the input probes and watched the ohmmeter drop to zero, confirming that the probes were correctly wired and were not open.
Lastly, switching the VOM to the DC voltage scale and applying the same input leads across a 9v battery I could read the 9v on the meter and observe one of the LEDs lighting up. Then reversing polarity of the probes on the battery the other LED lit confirming proper wiring of the circuit. Do you subscribe to Mr. Have you built any of his original projects? I have watched a number of the YouTube videos and I learned something from each sand every one. Because of the quality an information in each video, I subscribed to the patron series. I stopped working with circuits some 40 years age so I have a lot of catching up to do. Because the videos cover both solid state and vacuum tube I am finding it much easier to pick up speed. I would very much like to purchase some of the PCBs Paul creates or at least get copies so I could generate and purchase boards from PCB manufacturers.

Since I found that Video, I have been a regular visitor to your site. I have been watching Paul for over a year now and am up to date on most of his videos, a brilliant engineer and a gifted teacher. I am 80 years old and worked in electronics all my working life and learn something from every video I watch. Carlson has started some electronics classes for super fair too cheap pricing.
You all could jump ahead to his troubleshooting section.During the AFD Crossband Test, military stations in various locations transmit on selected military frequencies and announce the specific ham frequencies they are monitoring to work radio amateurs. Take what will possibly be a final look at the feeders, switching boxes and antennas before they are pulled down and junked! Also here is the final transmission of the event weekend with, of course, the famous Radio Australia music box interval signal.

I know you invested a lot in this radio, but you certainly have a fine example now—that is fully-functional—and will most likely outlast us all!

Carlson's series of videos on his "Mr. Carlson's Lab" YouTube page invite viewers into one absolutely bonkers laboratory of vintage electronic and testing equipment, each narrated by the disturbingly pleasant Canadian whose elaborate and intricate demonstrations of how to repair, say, a year-old oscilloscope somehow manage to be absolutely mesmerizing. From potentiometers to ammeters to vacuum tubes, over the course of 40 minutes we learn exactly how this vintage beast took audio and turned it into radio waves; Carlson even takes us inside the transmitter itself, while it's turned on, to illustrate the glowing rectifiers.
I spent a lifetime not understanding and not particularly caring how vacuum tubes work. Thanks to Mr. Carlson's Lab, I now possess this entirely useless knowledge. No reasonable person would care so much about antiquated, obsolete hardware. But no reasonable person would take on the time-consuming, often frivolous projects that creep into my late-night working hours, either, so I find in Paul Carlson a twinned spirit.
And as I watch him slowly disassemble a complex, and seriously broken, piece of equipment — and then methodically repair and reassemble it — it makes any relationship conflict or personal struggle seem so small, simple, and easily resolved by comparison.
Carlson's Super Probe
Carlson my late-night office buddy. Carlson is perhaps most noted for his obsessive attention to detail in repairing equipment that presumably has no reason to exist this century, but is regardless treated as a precious and valuable prize once introduced to "the Lab. Earlier this year Carlson pulled a transformer from a malfunctioning oscilloscope in order to repair it. I am telling you that this is a minute video on the internet of a man fixing a small electronic component. In It does not sound compelling.
It is very compelling! Unfortunately, the capacitor in question is potted inside the transformer, in a block of tar. Carlson's solution? Hacking an old toaster oven into a tar-melting depotter that frees the components from their black grave and makes the final repair possible.

Read times. I understand he does this for a living and has a patreon subscription but I can't afford that as my funds are devoted to medical stuff. So obviously I don't want people to take the design and post it on the internet. But is there another product that does this that I could google? Come to think of it I might have a Chinese ebay capacitance tester I could scope once I get my stuff out of storage. The scope unlocks most of the mysteries hidden on a pair of leads.
I still have the phobia of "Will this blow up my scope? Once my situtation changes along with a few other things his page this page, and two other are going to be on my list to support. But I beleive in karma and it was better then hording it. I still feel guilty watching and not being able to support.
The worst thing to do when your finances are in a dip is to get yourself into a bunch of monthly reccuring charges, unfortunately a lot of my fellow country members haven't learned this. As someone pointed out on another thread, capacitors can also develop leakage only at high voltage, so this is not a complete test anyway.

I am on the fence about if HV is needed to detect leakage. I have no issues with someone building a better mousetrap, and sure, along the way, your gonna let some mice get away I respect his desire to promote his channel and promote his patron. I do wish though he would publish the concepts and open them for further development and refinement.
I certainly like the direction he is going with the concept. Hobbyist and a retired engineer and possibly a test equipment addict, though, searching for the equipment to test for that.

It's like keeping clunker cars on the road. As far as I understand, capacitor leakage is just a parallel resistance that develops over time in nearly all capacitors sooner or later. That eventually makes capacitors act more like resistors.
The guts of the circuit is just a detector for very low current which is supposed to go to actual zero in a perfect capacitor when a DC voltage is applied. The lights and all that are just a display of that information. Note that his specialization is in antique vacuum tube circuitry, so he's mostly looking to test the leakage in ancient capacitors.

When a filter capacitor in a modern circuit leaks current, it'll mostly kind of work at low voltages, and ultimately just cause the circuit to stop working. When you're dealing with V plate voltages in vacuum tubes, you might burn out an expensive, hard-to-replace tube valveor maybe even cause some real fiery harm.
I would imagine Paul Carlsons tester uses the standard recommended frequency to test capacitors esr.
